Welcome to Anacostia, a Southeast Washington, DC, neighborhood just east of the Anacostia River. Its core was incorporated in 1854 as Uniontown, one of the District’s early suburbs, and it is now the Anacostia Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1978. Cedar Hill, Frederick Douglass’s home from 1877 until his death, is preserved as the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.
The Anacostia Metro station is about a 10-minute Green Line ride from downtown. The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum is nearby, and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail runs through Anacostia Park along the water. Housing includes historic homes and rowhouses in the historic district along with newer townhomes and condominiums.
